Woke up way too early this morning and couldn't get back to sleep. Since I was sleeping in the house where I work on Tuesdays, I ended up just getting up, helping out in the kitchen, drinking a smoothie for breakfast, and going to work early. I work in a brass instrument repair shop, mostly taking photos and updating the website, with some accounting and inventory. The past couple of weeks, though, it's been busy because a lot of students get their horns cleaned over winter break, and I've been doing some chemical cleaning on the horns. I'm not much good at it; I can't do much of anything other than dip the horns in the acid, scrape the cheese out of them, then put them back together and polish them. I've sort of removed a few dents, but I'm still pretty timid about manhandling the horns, so I usually have to get someone else to do the hard stuff. Today I spent way too long cleaning a cheap piccolo trumpet because I put one of the valves together backward. I had to go over all the valves again and figure out which one was backward, then shine the horn again because I'd gotten fingerprints all over it, then get laughed at by the other guys working because I was "polishing a turd." After cleaning one horn, my hands are black and I usually get silver polish on my face and in my hair. Sexy.

The breakfast smoothie caused me some trouble! My friend/boss put whey protein powder in before I had a chance to decide whether it's dairy or not. A million websites say it is, while a million others say it isn't. It's made from whey, but I guess the protein is removed from the whey, so it doesn't have caseins or whatever it is that affects lactose intolerant people. Basically, it's a dairy product because it's produced from dairy, but it doesn't have any of the bad dairy stuff in it? I don't know, and I'm not sure I really need to know at this point. I'm tired of thinking about it, in any case. I drank the smoothie, and there was only a tiny bit of powder in it, but I probably will avoid whey protein for the rest of the month.
Leftover sweet potato curry for lunch, along with some homemade guacamole and blue corn chips. Knockwurst, blue cabbage, potatoes and onions for dinner. Went to hear auditions for the new euphonium player in the brass band, then drove home and had cinnamon bread with peanut butter. Going to spend tomorrow getting the house back in order and practicing my euphonium.

Gross! Scrape the cheese out of them!! lol... nice.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's gross. A little bit of build up is normal, but some people don't clean their horns for years, and it gets pretty cruddy in there. It's better than being a dentist, but not much better.
